Subj: Rally
Date: 3/1/02 10:06:51 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: rwaimin@earthlink.net (Albert Runningwolf)

WHAT: Demonstration by Native Americans and their supporters to protest
minority employment practices, reporting and handling of Native American
burial grounds, and the allocation of funds of the Native American Trust
License Plate by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. To show
support for a Native American Commission and the boycott of Angel Mounds
State Historic Site.

WHERE: Capitol Commons Park
Directly across from the State House on Washington St.
Indianapolis, Indiana
*Indiana State Department of Administration denied our permit to meet
at the State House.

WHEN: Saturday, March 2, 2002
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

WHO: Representatives of American Indian nations of Indiana and
surrounding states, including the American Indian Movement (AIM).

WHY:
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources removed William Spellazza,
Cultural Coordinator of Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville,
IN from his position and transferred him to New Harmony State Historic
Site. Mr. Spellazza is a Native American and serves as program director
for the site and as the cultural link from Angel Mounds, a pre contact
Mississippian village, to present-day Native Americans. Mr. Spellazza
is the only Native American, in fact the only representative of a
minority ethnic group, employed in a management position with IDNR.
Stricter laws regarding the handling and reporting of Native American
burial sites. Currently, Native American remains are housed in various
museums around the state; specifically Glenn Black Laboratory at Indiana
University houses over 300 human remains from Angel Mounds SHS.
Currently, the income generated from the Native American Trust License
Plate is allocated to the Museums of Prophetstown, which is part of the
Department of Natural Resources. The museum has been having financial
difficulty and all funds are frozen. The money from the Native American
Trust License Plate should be used for issues related to housing,
unemployment, and health . . . not a museum!
The Native American Community needs a Commission to assist in the
education of the public and General Assembly in issues relating to
conditions causing exclusion of Native Americans from the larger Indiana
community, measures to stimulate job skill training and related
workforce development, measures to sustain cultural diversity while
improving race and ethnic relations, public awareness of issues
affecting the Native American community, measures that could facilitate
easier access to state and local government services by Native
Americans, and challenges and opportunities arising out of the growing
Native American population. Currently, the Native American community
has the Native American Governors Council, which was established by an
Executive Order. Yet, the Council is under the Department of Natural
Resources/Department of Archaeology - instead of the Governors office!
DNR has left the Native American community with no choice other than to
call for a boycott of Angel Mounds State Historic Site – due to the
removal of William Spellazza. We are asking all potential visitors to
Angel Mounds to show their support of Native American employment
opportunities, which is what Bill Spellazza represents, by withholding
their donations to Angel Mounds. We further want the corporate sponsors
of Angel Mounds events to reconsider their monetary support.

Subject: Rally Location Update

Our permit to meet at the State House was denied. We do have permission to meet in the park directly across from the State House on Washington Street. The park is called the Capitol Commons. It is South of the State House and sandwiched between the Hyatt and the Westin Hotel.

Albert Runningwolf has suggested meeting before the rally at the Eiteljorg museum for prayer at noon. I contacted the Director and he has notified his staff of the event - he said that they would welcome us.

I hope to see everyone at the Eiteljorg at noon or Capitol Commons Park at 2:00 pm.

Subj: Rally this Saturday .....
Date: 2/27/02 5:28:39 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: rwaimin@earthlink.net (Albert Runningwolf)

Dear friends and relatives,
I have been receiving emails asking about the A.I.M. Rally, please
let it be known that this is not an A.I.M. Rally but a rally for the
people. A.I.M. Indiana has just been asked to help bring the issues to
light. In my conversations with Mary Alexander and Bill Spellazza I have
assured them that A.I.M. is only here to assist in this matter and what
ever we can do we will. I would also like for everyone who has been
forwarding the email about the rally to also send this out as well :

Statement From Albert Runningwolf - Chairperson AIM Indiana
A.I.M. was asked to help and help is what we will do. We are not
here to take over any organization or to push our beliefs upon anyone
that does not believe in the A.I.M. I believe it was said best by the
respected Mohawk elder Louis Hall when he said : "Pledged to fight White
Man's injustice to Indians, his oppression, persecution, discrimination
and malfeasance in the handling of Indian Affairs. No area in North
America is too remote when trouble impends for Indians. AIM shall be
there to help the Native People regain human rights and achieve
restitution's and restorations." This is what A.I.M. stands for , it was
also said of the A.I.M. " They are respected by many, hated by some, but
they are never ignored ...The American Indian Movement is then, the
Warriors Class of this century, who are bound to the bond of the Drum,
who vote with their bodies instead of their mouths ...THEIR BUSINESS IS
HOPE." Birgil Kills Straight, Oglala Lakota Nation. I want to thank you
all for your support and I hope to see you all at the rally for Native
People of Indiana.

Subject: Upcoming Statewide Student Gathering

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to get the word out about a student gathering that is being planned by the American Indian Council at the Ohio State University. It is intended as a means for Indigenous students from across the state to get together and get to know one another...it's FREE and everyone is welcome to attend, so please pass this information on to anyone that might be interested in coming.

On Friday, March 8th, we will be kicking things off with a concert by Bill Miller at 9pm. He will be playing in Stecker Lounge on the 3rd floor of the Ohio Union.

After the concert, head on upstairs to the Multicultural Center on the 4th floor for a Pizza party and an Indigenous Movie Marathon (Smoke Signals, Pow Wow Highway, and Dance Me Outside to name a few titles). Feel free to bring a sleeping bag and crash on the 4th floor...our students have also generously offered floor space in their luxurious campus accomodations.

We will wrap things up on Saturday afternoon with a Social Dance in the Multicultural Center. Thunder Boyz will be singing for us and we will have frybread and some traditional food (I'm trying to negotiate tamales) as well as some "campus traditional" fare such as grinders, wings, etc.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions and we look forward to seeing you here next weekend.

Wado (thanks),
Barry
