On February 11, 2006, the 28th Annual International "Sacred Run"
On February 11, 2006, the 28th Annual International "Sacred Run" will begin from Alcatraz Island to Washington, D.C., a Distance of 3800 miles. The 70-day run will cover 12 states before arriving at the nations capital on Earth Day, April 22, 2006.
The theme of every sacred run is "All Life is Sacred." With every step, runners deepen their own commitment and vision, and at the same time they call America to a deeper sense of vision and Responsibility. All across America, we will listen and engage one another in Conversations about Mother Earth: Clean Air, Soil and Water; about sacred sites and burial sites and other issues of concern to Native Americans; and about the ways of the People in Peace and War. We must respect the Earth, and we must respect and listen to one another, strengthening our ties with all countries and global leaders who see World Peace as the Path of Life.
The Run will be relay style, Covering 100 miles each day. Each evening, the runners and community members will convene in a "Talking Circle" to listen to the elders of Various tribes and villages. Cultural exchange programs will be conducted along the route on a nightly basis. Each morning there will be a sunrise pipe ceremony to prepare each runner for the day, then a 10 mile walk and the run will commence after the walk. At the Close of the day, spiritual words will be offered in a giving manner. The run will follow a Southern route through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The Planning Staff is mapping the route, which will be a Southern Course. We anticipate 100 runners, 10 support vehicles, a bus and a small truck. The planning of the run will be Organized by Dennis Banks and the staff of Nowa Cumig Institute, and in California by Wounded Knee DeOcampo of the Vallejo Inter-Tribal Council & Fred Short of Waterford, CA.
