Saturday, September 18, 2004Subj: Upcoming campaigns and events! Date: 9/17/2004 From: info@leonardpeltier.org NMAI Opening, Washington, D.C. On September 21, an event honoring the opening of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian will be held in Washington, D.C. The Native Nations Procession will bring together tens of thousands of members of hundreds of tribes and native organizations to see the museum and its collection. As visitors enter the museum, they will enter an area known as the "Potomac". Along the walls of this area are inscriptions of names of donors and supporters of the museum. Leonard's name is among those listed as a contributor to the museum on this Wall of Honor. We are asking supporters to locate the inscription and place offerings at the wall in honor of Leonard and his struggle. Simple things like flowers, sage, sweetgrass, and tobacco ties can help bring Leonard's case to this event. We are calling on Leonard's supporters that will be in attendence to be visible, wearing t-shirts, buttons, and drawing attention however they can to Leonard's plight. We are also calling on supporters that may not have planned to attend the events, but are able and willing, to go to these events to put Leonard's case again in the spotlight. We also ask supporters to bring literature to have on hand and to distribute. This is an important event for Leonard's case to be a part of. A museum to the "American Indian" must also include the war waged against the indigenous peoples for the last 500 years, and Leonard's case is but another chapter in that war. The contact information and hours of operation of the museum are listed below. NMAI on the National Mall Fourth Street & Independence Ave., S.W. Washington, DC 20560 Phone: 202-633-1000 Special opening-week hours: The museum will be open continuously from 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Sept. 23: 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sept. 24: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sept. 25: 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sept. 26: 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m Freedom of Information Act (FOIA Documents) On Monday September 13, Peltier attorney Michael Kuzma petitioned a federal judge to order the release of all documents from the FBI's Buffalo field office as part of the larger effort to free Leonard. This action led to several articles done in papers across the region. To increase pressure on the FBI, we call on supporters to write to local newspapers, especially those newspapers in cities where the FBI still holds documents. You can write to the Buffalo News at: Everybody's Column, The Buffalo News, One News Plaza, P.O. Box 100, Buffalo, NY, 14240. Alternatively, you may fax your letter to 716-856-5150 or you may send an email to: LetterToEditor@buffnews.com. The LPDC calls on all supporters to increase the pressure to release the FOIA documents. We thank the many supporters that have already rushed to the call and written the FBI demanding the documents. You can also go to the online petition at: www.petitiononline.com/comerade Voter Initiative We are still asking all supporters to write to the candidates and demand that clemency for Leonard be a part of their campaign's goals. Besides the two major candidates, there are many third parties that have not yet voiced their oppinion on this major issue.
