Mascot IssueWednesday, April 10, 2002NCRSM Press StatementThe following press release from NCRSM was distributed at the annual conference and protest in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 8, 2002: ========== National Coalition on Racism in Sports & Media For Immediate Release PRESS STATEMENT The purpose of this press release is to inform the people of American that American Indians are not a part of the “American Dream,” nor have we ever been a part of that dream. There is a direct relationship between the negative portrayal of Indian people in sports, media, and pop culture, and the psychological damage that is generated within Indian families. The Forth-annual N.C.R.S.M. conference on the negative imagery of American Indians in sports and media has defined a three point plan for future action. 1. The N.C.R.S.M. calls on the U.S. Congress to pass a resolution proclaiming these images to be racist and in violation of civil rights law and against human decency. 2. Because of the failure of all major media networks to include American Indians or to serve their needs, the N.C.R.S.M. if filing a complaint with the FCC against all major networks. The purpose of this suit is that American Indians are left out of the national and international dialogue. 3. The N.C.R.S.M. calls on all people of good will to discontinue the purchasing and the wearing of merchandise from those professional teams engaging in racial profiling and stereotyping; this includes teams such as the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins, and the Kansas City Chiefs. posted by: Webmaster@ 10:54 PM
